14x20" Arches hot press watercolour paper
Graphite, watercolour, Keith's print "Breeze" overlaid
Some 250-300 hours

Work in progress shots

First of all I offer my deepest gratitude to my husband Keith, and to my wonderful friend Sam ^sphilr. In fact Sam is largely responsible for the existence of this piece. I've toiled over 5 failures, (one of which even had portions that were elaborately painted) and was on the precipice of simply giving up... Thank you both for your patient guidance.

This is one of the very rare occasions where I'm consciously conveying an idea, an emotion... something. Usually I just paint whatever scenery that blooms to mind, which is why I decided to lavish so much time and effort, for the sake of expressing something I find deeply... important.

No, this has nothing to do with suicide.

I am trying to convey the very moment when we realise the point of no return is right at our feet... that first second where we act on a decision that at the time might seem perilous, like having our hands bound and thrown off a cliff with a noose around our neck... and the unstoppable force of exhilaration that seems to bloom from the chest when the first step is taken... something wild and phenomenally beautiful bursts from within us... and in that instant, we are reborn. Perhaps not reborn as a better person... though reborn nonetheless.

Thank you very much for looking

Art has always been an extension of the artist's mind and emotions. Sometimes the emotions are well depicted and other times, they can be a little difficult to decipher. Of Angels In The Deep however, is one of those images that display emotions so intense and remarkable that you can almost feel the heat of the brush strokes as you look at the image.

The colors used in the image are bold and eye catching. You can almost see the feathers fluttering off of the mighty bird as it descends from the skies next to the hanging woman. The overall image gives off a great looking atmosphere and shadow effects off of both of the subject's bodies. The shading usage around each part of the character's bodies looks great and really feels as if the image was a photograph take in a studio.

Excellent detail also has a great contribution to the image. Each curve, feather, crease, bend and wrinkle on either the bird or the bound woman are well depicted and look great on this image. Everything just seems to flow together like water in an ocean.

All in all the piece shows what a truly talent artist ^snowmask is. With wonderful detail, crisp colors and a heavy emotional inspired imagery, this is truly a work of art.

I think anyone who looks this over, and then imagines what it would take to get from an empty canvas to this result with watercolor and graphite, will be deeply impressed by the craft. "Three hundred hours" says it all I guess, and just looking at the intricacy of the shading I can see where all that time went. I always appreciate work in which no corners were cut, nothing was left to be taken for granted, and the investment of energy was total. Detailing the toes for example, when you could have gotten away with a vague foot, but it makes a difference.

More than craft it takes a phenomenal amount of discipline to keep committed to a major project like this, and I appreciate that too. Especially when it comes in the face of several failures and new attempts. I am really glad all that has paid off in success here :)

Not centering the composition was the proper thing to do, though it is weighted to the right heavily now and white space is not personally something I am very into. A narrower canvas to eat up some of the white space on the left would help solidify it in a positive way perhaps, at lest for preview display if not printing... I like the color overlay, but it could use some blurring where there are sharp edges of yellow and pink, those edges stick out too much right now to my eye.

This makes me think a bit of one of the aspects of the "Fool" card in Tarot.
And the imagery and idea here are breathtaking, paired perfectly with the beautiful execution.

Ohhhh this painting has such meaning to me and one day I will own a print of it. I think the moment described in the visuals, that I've been anticipating for some time now and nearly cried when I first saw this painting for what I could relate to it, has come. Am I crazy? Mayhaps. Don't wanna bore you with my life story, but I've spent a long time living a certain, counterproductive and detrimental way, and within less than a month I feel like every philosophical fiber of my being has shifted direction and purpose. I'm a little let down that I wasn't fully aware of the precise foot-off-the-cilff's-edge moment as it was happening, but excited for the future, nevertheless. And it's all in my hands now.

Wow, fiery! I feel blues and watery colours most often from your work, so this one kind of caught me off guard. Very soft but also very strong. Great work!

So I know I have 40 deviations of yours sitting there, but how on EARTH did I miss this?

Beautifully rendered (that eagle is amazing)- I keep finding new expressions in her face. I just feel like I relate to this work, with that sense of no return, and worrying about what you have left behind, but oh how you grow from that leap!

Phenomenal
