30x40" oil on gessoboard

Circa January 2009 -

Circa August 2009 -

So I keep coming back to this one. It's a great concept.

My first serious oils! And it's massive. This is to scale!

This is actually not yet finished. It's one of those types of oil paintings that can take on dozens of glazes. I'd like to keep building on this one, establish even more contrasted and distinctive lighting.

However I have to stop at this point as this is going to a show from April to June in LA, The Eastern Aesthetic at La Galeria Gitana. I have 4 other paintings for this show, all of them watercolours.

So I'll be revisiting this painting amidst my concurrent projects. It'll be interesting to see it develop, and who knows how long it will take before I decide to stop for real.

My warm thanks to my dear husband `zerocomplex and good friends ^sphilr, `wroth, and `johnpaulthornton (who will also be at the show!). Your support and guidance are always deeply appreciated

And thank you all for looking!

Wow!!! Was hard to even say that! Speechless that anyone, let alone someone I know, is capable of such a creation!!! I'm pretty sure my spirit companion animal is a bird (prolly a raven, or humming bird), that's prolly why I am sufficiently sorbed to this painting.

Nicely done. Wouldn't quite call it pop art - but it is awesome. (I remember the aquarelle-crayon work and really liked that. It's interesting to see what it has morphed into. )

I greatly prefer oils to watercolours. So much more forgiving and so much more I can do with them :) It is the ultimate medium.

Amazing! It's beautiful! I love the colors! Great job :D

By the way, how can you do smooth shades with oils? Because I have already painted with acrylics ( it seems to be similar) and I didn't know how to make them.

Oils is a lot more forgiving and slower-drying than acrylics, therefore it's a lot easier to smooth out gradients in oils than it would be using acrylics.

I just use a very soft brush to fan out the colours :) A kolinsky filbert usually does the trick.

I have a video of me painting the underlayers of the birds' wings, if you'd like a reference -

Hope this helped!

Holy cow! :la: This is amazing! i love the colors, they're absolutely stunning! I really like how the expression is, and the birds are realistic as well.

The colors are amazing, and the palette is awesome. I really happen to love the temperature of the piece. Really beautiful.

I'm curious, did you get it in glossy, or matte? I bought a glossy postcard of it (as I do with all my paintings, for proofing) and it turned out rather dark.

I have a glossy photo print, I'll see if I can get it in lustre and matte too hopefully the same size before I get the bigger scale version, and it's a bit dark but that's meant to be normal for them apparently.

No, actually it is not. Like I said, I have glossy postcards of everything I've painted since 2010, and they are -extremely- accurate to what I see on multiple screens. I wonder if it's some sort of glitch :/ Do let me know how the lustre and matte turn out if you do get them, so I can decide on whether or not to brighten them up a bit, or to file a complaint.

Well I have done some comparisons between all three print finishes and as far closely matching the original the Lustre finish seems to be closet the glossy and matte are a little darker.

Hope this helps :)

I love this and the August 2009 version - so much improvement! :wow:

Your technique and skills have evolved into masterful, seriously! Everything is majestic - I'm impressed by how you managed to make all the contrasting elements blend together so harmoniously ... plus, her expression is priceless. :) One's just bound to wonder how bewildered and surprised she was at the awkwardness of it all. :D

You're an incredibly talented artist, Katie!
