Critiques

:iconfrozenpandaman:
I was looking for a piece to write a critique on, as I have never done one before, and I just happened to stumble upon this amazing piece by you... :giggle:

This piece has a strong sense of mystery to it, it seems to be... I love how you you have her holding a cage, with little drops of light inside. I wonder what, if anything, they represent to you...? Your use of textures in her skin and in her hair give the piece a 'fragile' feel, and the thin, wispy arms and legs create an image that she is still holding on to what is around her. In her left hand, she is holding a small, red, glowing ball... does it act as a light for her, or could it be her soul, or heart? It kind of reminds me of the scene from Howl's Moving Castle when Howl swallows the star in his childhood, if you have ever seen that movie. :)

The black background also accents the piece a lot, and makes the figure of the woman very prominent-- not just because it is the only "figure" in the piece, but because it is rich with vivid colors and amazing textures. Looking at the submission date of this work, and seeing that you submitted it close to two years ago, I have noticed that in your later works you seem to be using more angular shapes and lighter colors... but it's all excellent, with a fantastic concept behind each unique piece of artwork.

I think if you close your eyes long enough and let the music envelop you, you can find yourself anywhere.

I enjoy looking at your paintings. This reminds me of traditional chinese style of painting. But instead of the bright/white background you've rebelled and did it your own way. Like a modern day Rembrandt or Picasso. You painted this for your self but want to show people what it meant. It has a message, which i can't figure out. But to me she looks free.

I love the solid, dark background it makes a good contrast against the subject. I love the simplicity and varied tones used in this, including the shading. The concept is just so simple yet brilliant. Keep it up! :D

I'd turn gay for `Vlei.

Elegant as jewelry, expressive as piano music; the profound isolation written in our origins and the brave vigilance of keeping hope alive-- to quote The Smiths: There is a light and it never goes out...
Art deco with real soul.

That is lovely - the flow of the image, even with the sharpness of the edges is wonderful and I really like the subtle texture on the skin - great work my friend

great painting, the colors and forms makes it really sexay and intriguing...

dunno why but that cage reminds me one of Magritte's works for some reason.

Well, Magritte does have that kind of "floating" thing going on, I guess, and that whole surreal atmosphere, so yeah I can understand from your perspective.

Thank you :)

I thought long and hard about the texture on her skin, and I just thought it was right for who and what she is.

Thank you, dear Lesa

Actually, speaking of jewellery, I'll let you in on a little something :shh: The cage is actually ever so slightly inspired by Chanel's Fine Jewellery, in the Matelassée line, which I think is absolutely gorgeous. It'd be easier to check them out on their website, in the Europe>English>Fine Jewellery section :)

And thank you for expressing your thoughts, dear Sam
