Oh wow finally, the second installment to my film characters project.
After... wow. 2 months. Fucking incredible!

Anyways, same deal.
The main focus is line-work.
To have it so it's strong enough to stand on it's own;
and colour becomes clutter.
Again, inspired by the amazing Al Hirschfeld.

DETAILS

Sketched in Corel Painter.
Exported to Illustrator for line-work.
Finishing touches in Photoshop.

I did 3 characters instead of 5, as it was in the previous installment.
A lot of it has to do with my lack of time to work on personal projects.
And anyway I can only think of 3 really, really good film heroes.
For films from my generation, that is.

The following are reasons for which I chose these particular three:

• Actor's performance
• NOT being cliché; e.g. Superman, William Wallace, Indiana Jones (sorry, I love him though), etc.
• To me, what defines a hero is the fact that they could be not so very different from villains.
They are in many ways flawed, which is the key to making them likeable to the audience.
What seperates them from villains is that they're willing to acknowledge their flaws and mistakes,
and they're willing to make the effort and/or sacrifice to better themselves, not only for
themselves, but for those around them as well. A classic example would be Jules Winnfield
from Pulp Fiction, who, however foolish it may sound, decided to take a different path
from that of a gangster/hit-man, and become a "shepherd" to the "weak".

CHARACTERS' INFO

• Bob Harris from Lost In Translation, played by Bill Murray
• Leon from Léon, or Léon: The Professional, played by Jean Reno
• Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction, played by Samuel L. Jackson

There were others that I wanted to include,
such as Edward Scissorhands and Lester Burnham (from American Beauty),
but somehow, I just didn't get that right-on feeling as I did with the other 3.

Oh well.

Please enjoy.
And thanks for looking, as always.

The smooth lines and definition, both of the black and your own explaination, really appeal to me. Wonderful message, wonderful artwork.

Katie these are awesome. My personal favourite is Leon, but i knew them all straight away...
I fucking love Lost in Translation, that movie is like one of those dreams you have which you don't want to wake up from.

So besides just beautiful confidently drawn lines, great penwork. Nice one
Awesome work, I love the charecters you chose! Jules is indeed THE MAN. I love the style, you seem to have really gotten to grips with it!

Jules Winnfield isn't technically a hero tho....

i ask of life,
not to be part of something, but to be part for something.
These might be even better than the Villains; that ability to gather much information into minimum details includes gesture, body language-- these ones I could identify in their thumbnail state. The Leon is nothing short of classic-- if the studio puts out a 15 year anniversary edition, this should be the cover of the dvd. :D The choice to pose him with his beloved plant is nothing short of inspired. Brilliant, brilliant work.

No Star Wars characters! I'm shocked! =p

Those are still some great selections though. Brilliantly done too. :)
