This is supposing that a time machine existed, just for me, so that Anakin (well, Vanakin) and Luke, both in their prime, can battle to the death! Growing up with the original Star Wars, I'd always imagined Anakin to be pretty bad ass. Regardless of how he's portrayed in the Prequels (I personally thought it wasn't that bad at all). So here he is, bustin' out Midi-chlorians, going crazy like fuck 'all.
My original idea was to have Luke being owned by Force Lightning whilst being pressed down by a lightsaber... I guess that would have been overkill. I mean, Mark Hamill had already been run over by a car once.
I think I've had this idea for 3 years now and just never really went all the way to execute it. Mainly because I couldn't decide how to pose the characters.
My husband Keith was a big help. We took reference photos of ourselves, so that I can block the whole image on paper, which we scanned.
I wish Keith's art supplies were still around. I wanted to paint this in oils. But, I was feeling it. Might as well use what I have
Ahaha, I love this! The colors and the composition are so wonderful I love how the edges are out-of-focus. By the way, you know the Star Wars last supper painting? Some guy took it and made it all out of screenshots from the movies - it took him ages, but it's pretty sweet. [link]

Fully visualizes the phenomenon of Lucas's stories earning their place as modern mythology; hero and villain elevated to archetypal status... Compressing the image down to mostly light and shadows makes for a beautifully dramatic image, and framing Anakin's face between the two swords has the effect of vignetting the more interesting of the two characters and drawing our specific interest to it, and to his side of the conflict... I love the way you've melted the shadows as they reach the margins, giving us a larger, overall frame that introduces us to the conflict, and then, with a kind of cinematic approach to visual storytelling, you lay in that second frame for Anakin's "close-up"... Powerful, operatic and visceral imagery, very intelligently crafted.
Nice use of the lightsaber colors lighting the fight. I also like the angry crazy look on Anakin's face. Luke's pose is great and dynamic as well. The dark atmosphere here is nicely portrayed with the dark background.
My only real nitpick is that, at first glance, it's hard to tell where Anakin's lightsaber blade is coming from before I realized his hand was behind his back preparatory to a swing. The cape is awesome, but seems to get in the way and confuse me more with the lightsaber blade's position.
Yeah, I know what you mean. The thing is, with the angle I chose, I wanted it really vertical, and so the more vertical it is the more distorted the image becomes. It was kind of confusing for me to draw too. But oh well. At least I got it. Eventually
I debated too whether or not to have the cape. But with felt so much better without, so there it is :)
Thanks for the feedback!
I used to have a MR Anakin's lightsaber. I left it in Hong Kong though.

I'm so happy you noticed the framing of Anakin's face. I love that there's red and blue highlights on him, and only blue on Luke. Man I love Anakin's character.

Dang about leaving the lightsaber in Hong Kong. Maybe you'll get it back someday.
